“If a man is called a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.
– Martin Luther King jr.
I really need to get a new job. Don’t get me wrong I am grateful for the job I have, it just is not for me long term. Fresh out of college I just knew I would have a job that was not perfect but at least beneficial to my long term goals. However, where I am right now is teaching me nothing but extreme patience. I currently work with kids, and while teenagers can be difficult I love each one. The problem I am having with my current situation is lazy ass adults. Now I know I am not perfect, but no one can ever say I don’t do my job.
Working with kids can be very challenging, but the inclusion classroom that I work in does not require much effort just patience and kindness. These trifling ass adults cannot even do that. They moan, whine and complain over the simplest things and do nothing but sit on their phones all day. Granted I am on my phone occasionally, but only when it is appropriate. I complete all my task, and make sure the students are on task. I go above and beyond to assist the teacher to make her life easier and the people I work with only move when specifically asked to do something. I am sorry but we have all been working here since August and you have to be told what to do in January.
It really upsets me when people put in charge of molding and educating young minds do not take their jobs seriously. A couple weeks ago I got in an argument with some coworkers who felt like the teacher I am in the class with pushes the students to hard and that I “take school to seriously.” I was done at that moment. How is it possible that because the teacher and myself push the students and do not let them just get by because they have a disability a bad thing. How is wanting the kids to learn applicable life lessons and not just how to avoid difficult situations a bad thing. The school system is infested with teachers who care nothing about the growth of their students and it is sickening.
So when I say I don’t like my job I mean it, but I understand why I am here. I am here to help make a difference no matter the size. I am here because people have gotten lazy and sometimes it takes a fresh face to wake people up. I am here because I was fortunate enough to receive private school education and I must pay it forward by putting in the energy professors poured into me. I know why I am here and for as long as I must be I will give those kids everything I have because someone has to be willing to do more.
If you can relate comment your profession below. It is important that no matter what we are doing we give it our all. It doesn’t matter if it is your dream job or just temporary. We are placed in these positions for a reason and we should take advantage of every situation. This week do more for your boss. Turn in your assignment early or help out a coworker. Be a bright light for those around you and in return you will be rewarded.
