Every day is a new chance to get organized or re-organized. With so much going on in the world, it can only take 5 minutes to get booked, busy and overwhelmed. The long list of what needs to get done will never seem shorter unless you write it down and cross it off.
No matter what method you find practical in your life, just pick one! It will make a big difference. One method that people find very effective is using an agenda book. Think back to elementary, middle and high school when your teachers told you to write down your assignments and homework. Back then, your parents or family member would check and make sure you did all your work. Why should being an adult be any different?
Yes, you are grown and are a responsible adult. However, forgetting is apart of human nature. George Miller, a pioneer in cognitive psychology believed in the number 7. He measured the amount of information that can be held in short-term memory. He came to the conclusion that the average short-term memory can hold seven (5-9) chunks or bits of information at a time.
So if your to-do list gets a little lengthy, chances are you will forget to do one of those things. A good way to avoid this is to find a cute, creative, feminine or masculine agenda. Find one that you like and integrate it into your everyday life. Appointments, contacts, meeting, chores, gym, sleep, bills, vacation, whatever you need and whatever is important to you, write it down.
Start at the top, what is most important or due first goes first. After that, work your way down. If it keeps you up at night, definitely write it down. Once you write it down, you no longer have to think about it all day because it is right in front of you whenever you need to take a look. Once you have written it down in a linear list, put it on the calendar in chronological order and cross it all off! This is the fun part.
Complete task, cross them out, check it off and pat yourself on the back. Celebrate your accomplishments and reschedule things that do not need to be done right away. Regardless if you use this method or choose to utilize electronic calendars, take the initiative today to take unnecessary stress out of your life by whatever means necessary.
